Thane (Maharashtra): Maharashtra’s star paddler Sanil Shetty went down fighting in the final of the ongoing UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championship (West Zone) to settle for the silver medal here on Friday Evening.

Sanil, who had been in stunning form throughout the tournament and had dropped just two games ahead of the big final in the Men’s Singles category, capitulated to fellow PSPB player and India No. 1 Manav Thakkar.

He put up a spirited fight but couldn’t absorb the barrage of strokes that Manav unleashed on him, eventually losing 1-4 (4-11, 8-11, 11-8, 2-11, 9-11).

Earlier in the tournament, Sanil beat the Haryana duo of Sourav Saha and Jeet Chandra by identical 4-0 margins, the first one in the quarters and the second in the semis.

Meanwhile in the Women’s Singles, another Maharashtra star, Diya Chitale, cornered the bronze medal after cruising all the way to the semi-finals. Diya too had a good run, which included a 4-3 victory over higher-ranked Nikhat Banu of Reserve Bank of India in the quarterfinals.

But she stumbled against India No. 6 Sreeja Akula of Reserve Bank of India in the semi-finals, going down 0-4 to settle for the bronze medal.
