PowerGen India and Central Asia 2013, commences in Mumbai
 
 The Indian Power Sector has witnessed a remarkable period in the last 5 to 7 years. Capacity additions have been the highest ever during the period and the road that seemed to be studded with innumerable challenges is slowly but certainly being addressed. The government and the policy makers have taken favourable steps towards financial restructuring of distribution companies, creating national grid connectivity, providing for tariff revisions etc.
 
As of 2010, India was ranked fifth in terms of electricity generation followed by the US, China, Japan, and Russia making it the ideal point in time for Renewable Energy World India and Hydrovision India to bring a leading conference and trade fair – PowerGen India and Central Asia 2013 to Mumbai at the Bombay Exhibition Centre. This year’s theme “Time to Deliver” is very much relevant.
 
Seen at the inaugural function giving the key note address was Mr. S.K. Srivastava, Secretary, Ministry of Coal, India and Mr. B P Rao, CMD, BHEL, India. The Chairman address was given by Dr Kirit Parikh, Former Member (Energy), Planning Commission India.
 
The first session was India Power: Time to Deliver which was chaired by Mr. Satnam Singh CMD, Power Finance Corporation, India and power players of the industry including – Mr. Deepak Amitabh - CMD, PTC India Ltd, Mr. Prabhat Kumar, CMD, Bhartiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd, Mr. Rakesh Sarin, Managing Director, Wartsila Ltd, Krishna Mankad, Whole Time Director and CEO, Reliance Power Ltd and Mr. Deepesh Nanda, Regional General Manager, GE Power and Water (India).
 
The conference played a catalyst role in creating a common business forum for global and local stakeholders. Evolving the format of the fair with the changing dynamics of the industry, special importance was given to ensure a session on the Financial Health of the Power Sector which was addressed by Mr. K. Rajagopal, Director and CEO, LancoPower Ltd India, Mr. Vikas Neeraj, Head of Operations India (Energy), Lyold Register Asia and Dr Ashok Haldia, Director – Finance, PTC India. This was one knowledge exchange that widened the market insights of the attending delegates.
 
The delegates were seen attentively listening to session chaired by Mr. Jayant Kawale, MD, Hydro and Renewables, Jindal power Ltd on Policy and Regulations. Pascal Storck - Chief Operating Officer, 3 TIER, USA and Dr. Scott Eichelberger, Director of Assesment USA joined in to speak about operational reforecasts and climate variability to help better understand long term uncertainity. A part of the same discussions were Vivek Sharma, Director, Energy Practise – Crisil and Mr. J Krishna Sankar, CMD, Eastern Power Systems Pvt Ltd.
The event also featured several pivotal panel discussions by numerous prominent personalities from India’s Power Sector Industry such Mr. Sundara Kavidass, Senior Vice President, Essar Power Gujarat Ltd., India on Improving Boiler Efficiency, Impediments to Investments in the Power Sector by Session Chairman – Mr. T. S Sankraligam, Former CMD, NTPC India, Power Markets & Regulatory Issues by Session Chair: Mr. V. L Sonavane, Member, Maharashtra Electricity Commission, india to name a few.
