Synora, Krishna help St. Blaise snatch win to make semi-final

Mumbai, August 30: St. Blaise High School after dropping the first two rubbers staged a remarkable recovery by winning the next three on the trot to overcome St. Joseph’s High School (State Board) 3-2 in an exciting senior girls’ team championship quarter-final round match in the 11Even Sports Inter-School Table Tennis State Championships, Maharashtra, 2016, sponsored by Robomate+, powered by Square Off Sports, and played at the Khar Gymkhana table tennis hall .


The St. Blaise schoolgirls’ got off to a bad start as Synora D’Costa lost the opener to St. Joseph’s Mitali Shriwardana 3-2 (11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 6-11, 6-11) and went on to lose the second rubber with Krishna Chavan going down to Samruddhi Jadhav also in five games at 4-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-7, 7-11.
However, the St. Blaise girls’ of Synora and Krishna combined well in the doubles tie to tame the St. Joseph pairing of Mitali and Samruddhi winning at 11-7, 12-14, 11-5, 11-5 before turning things around by winning the final two rubbers. Synora defeated Samruddhi 11-4, 11-5, 11-5 and Krishna overcame Mitali 12-14, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8 in the decider to clinch a thrilling win for St. Blaise and a passage to the last four round.

Meanwhile in other senior girls’ quarter-final matches, Utpal Sanghvi Global School, Fr. Agnel Multipurpose H.S., Vashi and Jamnabhai Narsee School, all came out comfortable winners.
Utpal Sanghvi and Fr. Agnel easily defeated Podar International School, Powai and St. Anne’s H.S. respectively by identical 3-0 margins, while Jamnabhai got the better of KES Bhagavati Vidyalaya 3-1 to also advance to the semi-final.
Utpal Sanghvi tasted more success as they advanced to the junior girls’ semi-finals defeating St. Joseph H.S. 3-1. Nalanda Public School, Jasudben M.L. School and Poorna Pranja Education School are the other schools to also make it to the junior girls’ semi-finals.
Results - Team championship (all quarter-finals) – Junior girls: Nalanda Public School beat Bal Vidya Mandir 3-1; Jasudben M.L. School beat Podar International School (CBSE), Powai 3-0; Utpal Sanghvi Global School beat St. Joseph H.S. 3-1; Poorna Pranja Education School beat Ryan International School, Goregaon 3-2.

Junior girls: St. Blaise High School beat St. Joseph’s H.S. (State Board) 3-2; Utpal Sanghvi Global School beat Podar International School, Powai 3-0; Fr. Agnel Multipurpose H.S., Vashi beat St. Anne’s H.S. 3-0; Jamnabhai Narsee School beat KES Bhagavati Vidyalaya 3-1.

Junior boys: Dhirubhai Ambani International School beat Utpal Sanghvi Global School 3-1; IES Orion beat Pragnya Bodhini HS 3-1; Jamnabai Narsee School beat Aditya Birla World Academy 3-0; The Universal School Tardeo beat Podar International School, Satara 3-0.


Senior boys: Utpal Sanghvi beat Lilavati Podar 3-2; Fr. Agnel beat Dr. Antonio 3-0; St. Blaise beat Vasant Vihar 3-1; Jamnabai Narsee beat Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School 3-0.
