INDIA'S PACKAGING MARKET TO GROW TO USD43.7 BN BY 2016:

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF PACKAGING BACK WITH 5TH EDITION OF INDIAPACK

The Indian Institute of Packaging was set up in May 1966 by the Indian Packaging and allied industry and the Government of India, Ministry of Commerce. 

Its bi-annual initiative, INDIAPACK 2013 is now in its 5th edition and being organized at Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goregaon East, Mumbai between 28th and 31st January, 2013 with the theme, ‘Packaging for Economic Growth’.
It will provide a unique platform for the packaging and allied industries to showcase the development of newer packaging materials and packaging media.

INDIAPACK 2013 is supported by Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Ministry of Food Processing Industries , Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Government of India.

The Chairman of IIP, Shri S K Ray said, “ the total turnover of the packaging industry in India is 27.6 bn USD. Globally its about 550bn USD. There are roughly  22000 packaging companies in the country- from raw material manufacturers to machinery suppliers to ancillary material. 85% of these 22000 units are MSMEs. The industry is growing at 12% p.a in India, as against the global growth rate of 5 % per annum. India is at the threshold of explosive growth and we are looking forward to a great exhibition and knowledge sharing.”

There are 11 countries and  three state governments participating; Karnataka (to evaluate  packaging solutions for fruits, vegetables and flowers among other things), Bihar (seeking packaging solutions for rice and honey among other things) and Jharkhand (seeking solutions for packaging and promoting handicrafts). N C Saha, Director IIP adds, "  In India, the per capita consumption of packaging is only 4.3 kg per person per annum,  as against Germany which is at 42 kg and even China which is at  20kg which is very low as compared to global standards. Initiatives like Indiapack will convert large unpacked commodities into processed and packed and well-presented commodities. There is scope for innovation, entrepreneurship as well as logistical advancements."

The exhibition will be inaugurated by H E MoS for Commerce & Industry Dr.(Smt) Purandeshwari.

Expected participants include Packaging raw material manufacturers, convertors, machinery suppliers and service providers
Concurrently, the Indian Institute of Packaging will be organizing a two-day International Summit on "Emerging Trends in New Generation Packaging", with an objective to disseminate knowledge on issues like environment, health, safety innovation, aesthetics, quality, economics and consumer convenience, on 29th – 30th January, 2013 at Hotel The Leela, Mumbai.

Key speakers include  Mr.S.K.Ray, Chairman IIP, Mr.Thomas Schneider, President World Packaging Organisation, Mr.Amarendra Sinha, IAS, Addl Secretary Ministry of MSME 

CONTEXT
IIP India is the 6th largest packaging market in the world expected to grow to the 4th largest market in the world with sales of around USD $43.7 billion by 2016. The packaging industry has linkages with FMCG, logistics, Shipping, Printing Plastics and White Goods among others. On an issue basis, packaging impacts the environment, health, safety, innovation, aesthetics, quality, economics, consumer convenience etc.”

ABOUT IIP
The Indian Institute of Packaging was established in the year 1966 jointly by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India and the Packaging and Allied Industries in the country. The Institute was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act 1860, on 14th May, 1966.The Institute successfully introduced a number of services and kept on increasing the sphere of services already introduced. The objective set for the Institute was to bring about and sustain appropriate improvements in the standards of packaging particularly for exports.
 IIP has been organizing INDIAPACK, the most comprehensive industry exposition on packaging for the last four years. In its 5th year, the exhibition aims to involve as many stakeholders from all over the world as possible to develop its theme on packaging for economic growth.
