Mumbai: Maharashtra continued with their fine run of form with a thumping 4-0 rout of Gujarat in the final league match of the West Zone qualifying match of the 71st Santosh Trophy National Championship at the Rajmata Chunkumari Stadium, Waidhan - Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh. Maharashtra finished top of the group scoring 8 goals and without conceding a single goal.
Aaron D'Costa who missed from the spot in the last match, latched onto a through ball to finish with aplomb and give Maharashtra the lead in the 2nd minute before inform  Shravan Shetty scored the 2nd goal to double the advantage. The Maharashtra team surged ahead with Shravan Shetty securing his brace and also the 3rd goal of the game.
Complacency seemed to creep into the Maharashtra camp as they failed to capitalize on the advantage as Gujarat grew in strength, but substitute Vaibhav Shirley hammered in the final goal in stoppage time to complete a resounding 4-0 win.
"We need to concentrate. We can’t afford to be complacent and allow the other team to grow into the game. Nonetheless, our boys played some excellent attacking football and we look forward to the final round,” said Head Coach, Godfrey Pereira.
The final round fixtures and venue are yet to be decided.
Result: Maharashtra 4 (Aaron D’Costa 2nd, Shravan Shetty 16th, 30th, Vaibhav Shirley  90+1st) beat Gujarat 0.
