Mumbai, October 2012:  Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) India , a brand new, two-day exhibition and conference addressing the pertinent issues in occupational safety and health industry was held recently at Nehru Centre, Mumbai. The launch edition that was organised by United Business Media (UBM)  addressed timely topics and provide tangible solutions to conforming to safety and health standards across organizations in India.

Although for the past 50 years India has had legislation on occupational safety and health, the recent mishaps at the Mumbai Metro and the Delhi Metro wherein a section of an under-construction Metro rail bridge collapsed and the recent fire at Mantralaya and Manish Market in Mumbai bring to light the high disregard for safety in India and highlight the importance of swiftly enforcing stringent safety standards in India.

UBM, the world’s leading event organiser, which has 15 years experience organising international safety events such as Safety & Health Expo in the UK, launches OSH India to create a platform for thousands of occupational safety and health experts and senior business managers from across the Manufacturing, Oil & Gas/Energy, Mining, Heavy Engineering, Heavy Construction, Automotive, Pharmaceutical and Hotels and Leisure sectors. Prominent exhibitors featuring the latest in safety products and services at OSH India include: 3M India, the British Safety Council,Ansell Healthcare Europe, JSP, Joseph Leslie, Lakeland Gloves and Safety Apparel and Honeywell Safety Products and many more.

“Approximately 4% of the world's gross domestic product is lost because of injury, death and disease of employees through absence from work, sickness treatment, and disability and survivor benefits. OSH India includes the showcase of state-of-the-art equipment in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Lifting and handling equipment, Fall arrest equipment etc, which could prevent tens of thousands of injuries having no lost time in contrast to the current number of 700,000 lost workdays each year.” said Mr. Vijay Adhikari, Project Director for OSH India, UBM.

The paid conference taking place at OSH India broadly covered hot topics including “Successfully Identifying and Evaluating Hazards and the Risks Posed at the Workplace”, “Precautionary Measures to be Taken”, “Better Preparation for Handling Untoward Incidents”, “Managing Common Hazards”, “Understanding and Implementing the Best Global Policies and Practices for Employee Safety”, to name a few. Key speakers  at the conference were Mr. Ajit Singh, Executive Vice President-Corporate Infrastructure and Services, LARSEN & TOUBRO, Mr. Birendra Sharma, Vice President Safety, ULTRATECH CEMENT (ADITYA BIRLA GROUP), Mr. Anuj Dutta Sharma, Environment, Health and Safety Manager, GE ENERGY, Mr. Suresh Tanwar, Corporate Head, Safety, Health and Environment, TATA MOTORS, and more.
