Mumbai: Their Majesties King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia
of Sweden will arrive in Mumbai on Wednesday December
4 and this will also
mark Their Majesties' first visit to Mumbai. This
is the second leg of Their
Majesties’ 5-day State
Visit to India
at the invitation of President Ram Nath Kovind.
The aim of Their Majesties visit to Mumbai
is to further strengthen the
good relations between
Sweden and India, and to promote
Swedish-Indian cooperation. This further affirms
Sweden’s commitment to be a key
partner for India in its
rapid development, and in efforts
to tackle common
challenges in areas
such as the climate change
/environment, infrastructure, research, health and enable
increased trade and investment for Swedish and Indian companies in both directions.
“I am honoured to welcome Their
Majesties to Mumbai.
This visit provides
a further boost
to the already excellent relations between Sweden and India which
are based on shared values
and goals. In fact,
the enthusiasm for engagement is growing on all fronts
– between governments, between businesses and most important between people,” said Ms. Anna Lekvall,
Consul General of Sweden in Mumbai. “And this is the basis of our campaign
#SwedenIndiasambandh since ‘Sambandh’ means connection in both Swedish
and Hindi,” Ms. Lekvall added.
The day in Mumbai will begin with Their Majesties
taking part in a clean-up
drive at the Versova Beach, followed by lunch with the Governor of Maharashtra Mr. Bhagat Singh
Koshiyari and a visit to the Door
Step School which provides education for under privileged children who are first-generation learners.
Later, Their Majesties will
visit the 26/11
Taj Memorial to pay their
respects to the victims of the Mumbai
terror attacks. In the evening His Majesty will
join a roundtable meet with members
of the families that built
Mumbai.
In addition, Their Majesties will attend TEKLA,
a two-day workshop
to inspire young women and girls into the
world of STEM (science,
technology, engineering and mathematics) and the ‘Tekla
and Gender Parity Dialogue’
session which aims
at correcting the underrepresentation of girls and women in technology.
Their Majesties are accompanied by Swedish Ministers
and a high-level Business Delegation representing Swedish Companies – both large, well-established companies
and start-ups, along with representatives of Swedish Government agencies and universities.
As a part of the #SwedenIndiaSambandh campaign, the Consulate General
of Sweden, Mumbai
associated with the Rise Against
Hunger India (RAHI)
and has lit
up the iconic
5.6 km Bandra–Worli Sea Link from Dec 2-
4 in the colors of the Swedish
flag to welcome
Their Majesties. “I am thrilled
that we can give Their
Majesties a warm
welcome in true
Mumbai style.” Ms. Lekvall
added.
This is the second State Visit to India by Their Majesties, the first was in 1993. It is the fourth high-level
exchange between Sweden
and India since
2015 when Former
President Pranab Mukherjee was on a historic
first State Visit to Sweden.
In 2016, Prime
Minister Stefan Löfven
visited India and in 2018
Prime Minister Modi visited Sweden.
