Colourful ceremony marks opening of SFA Inter-Schools Games

Mumbai December 24: It was a historic day for Mumbai and Indian sports as almost 3000 school kids from 125 schools in the city of Mumbai and New Mumbai were present on the opening day of the inaugural Sports For All (SFA)-India’s Premier Inter-School Sporting System, which commenced at the D.Y. Patil Sports Stadium, Nerul. A colourful ceremony marked the opening of the games and after the children sang the National Anthem, the Games were declared opened.


Director and Choreographer Farah Khan was present to watch her daughter had participated in the Judo Competition and won a bronze medal. The Judo event was managed by Mumbai Judo Association with Asian Judo Champion Cawas Billimoria being present at the competition and was seen encouraging and providing guidance to the kids.Speaking on the occasion Dr Vijay Patil, Chairman D.Y. Patil Sports Academy, said “We are very happy to be associated with an event of such magnitude the atmosphere and the sporting spirit shown by the kids here is amazing. This will be a stepping stone for kids and provide them the right platform to excel in sports.”

After some warm-up sessions the children were seen participating in the seven Olympic sports like judo, tennis, badminton, squash, handball, volleyball and basketball, all being conducted simultaneously. The participants were provided with the state of the art infrastructure at the D.Y. Patil sports complex with each and every game being handled proficiently by professional sporting bodies like the MSLTA and MBA. A large number of 600 officials and voluntaries ensured worked diligently to ensure that the matches were conducted smoothly.

The highlight of the day was the Judo competition where the kids won 84 medals out of which 28 gold medals were awarded to the individual winners. Professional videographers captured all the matches on the opening day and the videos will be uplaoded on the website providing the much needed feedback for the players who have advanced to the next round.
