Sponsors Self-defence training for
250 girl students of Municipal Schools
Mumbai, 21st January 2014: In order to combat the burning issue of harassment on women, Amway India joined hands with the Corporate Social Responsibility wing of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) in first of its kind project on “Empowering the Girl Child”. Under the ageis of this project MCGM announced its pilot project “Self-defence training for girls of Municipal schools” in Mumbai. The first phase of this project will begin in two municipal schools of Mumbai. A memorandum of understanding was signed between MCGM, Amway India Enterprises Pvt Ltd and Sports Karate & kick boxing Association to impart training for 250 girl students from class 7th to 9th of R.K Marg Municipal school & Chakala Municipal School at Andheri East.
Present for occasion were Shri. Sunil M Dhamne, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Education, Mr.Sandeep Prakash, Regional head, Amway India, Ms. Prachi Jambhekar, Assistant Commissioner (Planning) & Head of the CSR Cell , Ashish Vaidya, Regional Manager Corporate Affairs Amway India West and Amway staff & distributors.
Recent times have seen many atrocities met by women across India and unfortunately the number of such incidents of assaults /harassments is rising. Law & order authorities are relentlessly working to address these unwarranted issues. However, considering the nature & magnitude of such incidents, women should also keep themselves proactively prepared in case if any such eventualities. To equip young girls with necessary skills this can empower them to address such incidents, MCGM has instituted a special project on self-defence training for adolescent girls of municipal schools in Mumbai.
The Sports Karate & Kick boxing Association will organize 25 sessions over a period of 3 months on self-defence. A periodic assessment on the progress would also be undertaken by MCGM.
Speaking on the occasion Shri Dhamne, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Education) said “The objective of this program is not only to discourage violence of any kind but to build confidence amongst our girls by providing this self-defence training and thus equipping them to face adverse situations. Collectively it is our moral responsibility to respect our girls and support them in all walks of life. We appreciate Amway India who has extended its support for this noble cause.” Assistant Commissioner (Planning) & Head of the CSR Cell, Ms. Prachi Jambhekar said “With partners like Amway India coming forward to make such projects possible, the CSR Cell of MCGM hopes to facilitate more of such initiatives to further the interests of our City”
Mr. Sandeep Prakash, Regional Head of Amway India West, stated, “It is indeed an honour for us to get associated with MCGM in this significant project. Today’s women are at par with men which has been proven time and again. There are many women who have not only successfully managed their homes but also progressed in other walks of life. We take pride to state that Amway India has more than 60% of distributors as women. Together we all must encourage & support them to build a bright future for themselves and by doing so we will surely imbibe best qualities & culture in our future generations.”
About Corporate Social Responsibility Cell, MCGM
MCGM is the primary agency responsible for Urban Governance in Greater Mumbai overseeing an expansive range of activities. In order to best engage the strengths of all stakeholders, a dedicated CSR Cell at the MCGM has been created and is operational for the past year. The cell does not give or receive funds for any of the projects but is primarily aimed at serving as a facilitating platform for initiatives across different sectors including but not limited to; health, education, environment, livelihoods and empowerment of women.
