Since many oil field workers work two weeks on, two weeks off, they literally get half of the year off. After about five years of experience in roughneck job, if they continue to do well, they can work their way up to Driller. The Driller is in charge of a crew of Roughnecks. He or she is responsible for the rig’s machinery during drilling and making sure that the rig operations run smoothly while drilling.
