Standing Up to Cancer with theme of "We can - I can"
Mumbai, 3rd February 2016: On World Cancer Day, 4th February 2016
Association of Hospital (AOH), one of the oldest and trusted associations in healthcare
of Mumbai, stresses on the significance of individual and collective efforts in
fighting cancer. As the second-most common cause of death next to cardiac
diseases, creating awareness about the disease is extremely important.
Close to 8.2 million people in the world fall
victim to the plague of cancer – a deadly disease that often attacks without
any warning. Of these, 4 million people die prematurely (between the ages of 30
to 69 years). In India itself, 6% of all deaths are caused due to cancer. It is
a complicated disease that causes uncontrolled growth and spread of cells, and
one whose treatment can easily burn a hole in a family’s savings. Let alone
those who do not have the financial acumen to get themselves treated.
Commenting on this occurrence, Dr. PM Bhujang,
President of the Association of Hospitals said, “This year’s theme for World
Cancer Day “We can. I can” corroborates our belief that we have to reduce the
burden of fighting cancer together – either as an individual or a collective society.
Everyone can do their bit in fighting cancer. Keeping in mind the difficulty
experienced during treatment and recovery processes, support even in the form
of a hug or a kind word, and is always welcome”
Further he adds, “Today we face a higher risk of
cancer due to drastic lifestyle changes one of which includes excessive tobacco
consumption. Early screening and improving lifestyle have known to reduce the
risks of cancer. Around 30% of all
cancer deaths could be avoided by simply improving our lifestyle.”
