Mumbai, September 2016: The Consulate General of Sweden along with the Swedish Institute will host the Swedish design exhibition entitled Design for Dignity at Prin. L N Welingkar Institute of Management Development & Research in Mumbai. The exhibition showcases products that are designed to improve the quality of life for individuals with special needs. Produced by the Swedish Institute, the exhibition encompasses 22 products and highlights the importance and benefits of being inclusive when developing products for the future.

Also on display will be a photo exhibition entitled AccessAbility which is based on everyday life with stories of Swedish and Indian individuals who are disabled. It tells us about their passions, dreams, hopes and sorrows. The exhibit is designed to be accessible to everyone and also comes with an audio aid to cater to those who are visually impaired.

The exhibition at the preview will host a talk on the 19th September conducted by an expert curator Ms. Margarita Bergfeldt Matiz on the history of Swedish design and the thought behind bringing this exhibition to India. In attendance will be several project stakeholders from Sweden and India, researchers, manufacturers, doctors, academia as well as representatives from non-governmental organization.

While sharing information on this exclusive event happening for the first –time in India, Ms. Matiz explains, In Sweden we haven’t yet fully won the battle for equality for disabled people, and the participants’ own stories say a lot about the Swedish disability policy. Giving everyone a chance to be seen and heard is a step along the way to not seeing people with disabilities as a homogeneous group but as individuals with different needs. The personal stories of this exhibit and the design products on show can hopefully initiate discussions and strengthen cooperation internationally on accessibility, dignity and disability policies. The lecture will also underline the importance of the right for an equal and dignified life for all, while introducing a different perspective on the concept of disability”.

Acting Consul General Mr. Jan Campbell Westlind said “Design isn't just about image; it’s about practical solutions, improving experiences and enriching the quality of life for the disabled. This exhibit highlights the importance and benefits of being inclusive when developing products for the future.”
