Mumbai, May 20, 2015: Mumbai based Alkem Laboratories Ltd - India’s 5th largest pharmaceutical company; announced that they would be organising the biggest ever Clean India National Movement by Indian doctors on 23rd May, 2015 with support from the Indian Medical Association. The cleanliness drive will witness participation of over 20,000 doctors, 3 lakh citizens and 900 Alkem employees across 135 cities in India. The message of the campaign is short and simple, “A Clean India will deliver a Healthy India”.  The rally in Mumbai will be initiated at two parallel venues, namely the Andheri East Station (Marol Pipeline Road) and the Malad East (Triveni Nagar) Station.

Improper sanitation, unhygienic habits, unclean surroundings, improper disposal of waste and open defecation all drastically increase the prevalence of disease in our country. It is deplorable that over 3 lakh children die before the age of 3 every year of diarrheal illnesses. This situation is preventable and the medical fraternity can play a great role in educating the masses about the inextricable relationship between sanitation and health. It is a fact that over 50% of the common diseases such as Malaria, Cholera, Diarrhea, Typhoid, Gastroenteritis can be prevented just by keeping one's environment clean; and the resultant burden on the health budget can also be reduced.

Addressing the media, Mr. B.N. Singh & Mr. Sandeep Singh, Managing Directors of Alkem Laboratories in a joint statement said, “This is the first time that a pharmaceutical company has initiated a mass cleanliness movement on such a large scale. India has a population of 1.27 billion and it is responsiblility of every citizen to keep their environment clean. We are extremely pleased to have the support of the medical fraternity & the Indian Medical Association and hope that together we can make a difference to our society. We would like to use this platform to call on every individual to join us at either at the Andheri East Station (Marol Pipeline Road) or Malad East Station (Triveni Nagar) from 9:30 to 11 am on 23rd May to help raise awareness how a clean India will deliver a healthy India.”

Speaking on the occassion, Dr. Pradeep Gadge –Diabetologist Shreya Diabetes Care Centre, Dr. Anil Sharma – Cardiologist at Bombay Hospital & Dr. K.C Mehta, Cardiologist at Shri Vaishnav Seva Trust Medical Center in a joint statement said, “Not many are aware that 24 per cent of the global disease burden can be attributed to environmental factors such as living in an unclean surrounding or following unhygienic practices. In fact, in Mumbai itself around 60% people stay in slum areas with an absence of proper sewage and waste water treatment facilities. This makes them more prone to a host of diseases like diarrhoea, malaria, swine flu and degnue. It is the responsibility of the government to provide proper living conditions for its citizens and the citizens of maintaining it. It is only through a joint effort and awareness initiatives can the true meaning of the Swach Bharat Abhiyan be realised. We congratulate Alkem Chronic on this initiative and urge everyone to join the rally on Saturday.”

Giving a local perpective, Dr Jayesh M. Lele, President Elect Indian Medical Association Mahrashtra Branch said, “It has been witnessed in recent times that the overall pollution levels in the city have increased drastically. Reports show how water that contamination has gone by by 19% and suspended particulates in the ambient air are way above the air quality standards set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Navi Mumbai has emerged to be one of the most polluted cities of India. Owing to this it becomes extremely important to raise awareness about keeping ones environemnt clean for without cleanliness, overall good health is not possible. We will be spreading awareness about this cause and initiative to all 2.5 lakh members of IMA across 1700 branches and asking them to join the movement.”

Also present at the event was Mr. Mahesh Kavathekar – Vice President of Alkem Laboratories Ltd. The rally is a step forward for Alkem Laboratories which is already known for its exceptional healthcare facilities and services. The company hopes to continue the momentum which has gotten off to a very successful start.
