June 2016, Mumbai  : On the eve of the International Yoga Day, www.mintageworld.com launched it in their website as well as in the You tube channel. It narrates an interesting journey on the history of yoga and the implementation of International Yoga Day in a lucid story telling format. The Philately Bureau of the Department of Post also celebrates its Platinum Jubilee today

India Post on 30th December, 1991 issued a set of four multi-colored stamps in the denominations of Rs 2, 5, 6.5 and 10 depicting various forms of yoga asanas.

A 5 rupee commemorative stamp was also issued on 4th August 2009 which honours Maharshi Patanjali - the ‘Father of Yoga’ who has compiled 195  Yoga Sutras that became the foundation of the Yoga philosophy.

World over the first “International Yoga Day” was observed on 21st June, 2015. A 5 rupee commemorative postage stamp was issued to celebrate this occasion. The stamp which depicts the official logo of the “International Yoga Day” was personally hand-picked by our Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi. He along with a large number of dignitaries from 84 nations performed 21 Yoga asanas (postures) at Rajpath in New Delhi. Coins of the denomination of Rs.10 and Rs.100 were also released at the same time. The reverse of the coin bears the logo of the “International Day of Yoga” with the inscription “सामंजस्यएवंशान्तिकेलिएयोग  (Saamanjya evam shanthi ke liye yog) in Devnagari script and “Yoga for harmony and peace” in English  around the logo. The date 21st June is inscribed at the bottom of it. On the outer left periphery of the coins , there is an inscription mentioning “Antharrashtriya yoga divas” in Devnagari script and “International day of Yoga” in English. The frontal view of both the coins bears the National Emblem in the centre with the iconic motto of India “Satyamev Jayate”  inscribed below it.

The word Yoga is said to be derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuja’ which means – to unite - a union of the individual consciousness with the universal spirit.  Though most of us connect Yoga to the complex physical exercises called ‘Asanas’, Yoga has a deeper potential to influence our mind and soul. It is said to be the union of the individual self (jivatma)  and the supreme self (divine or paramatma).

To celebrate its philosophy that helps us to achieve a harmony within and without, a conference was organized at “The Art of Living International Centre” proposed for observing 21stJune as the World Yoga Day. Though the idea of celebrating International Yoga day originated in 2001, it was not till December 2011 that a successful attempt was made. A conference titled “Yoga - A Science for World Peace”, was held on 4th and 5th December, 2011 in Bengaluru organized by The Art of Living Foundation and S-VYASA University jointly with the Yoga Portuguese Confederation of Lisbon, Portugal

Following a proclamation for a declaration of World Yoga Day and recognizing its universal appeal, on 11th December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21st June as International Yoga Day. The proposal was first introduced by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the UN’s General Assembly. He suggested the date of 21st June as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares special significance in many parts of the world.

Yoga is definitely a way of living a happy and a healthier life. Truly, Yoga transcends all philosophies and unites the people of the world. The logo of  “International Yoga Day”  is accompanied by a tagline - "Yoga for harmony and peace' – It is a perfect union of the elements of nature and man.
