a lesson in first aid response
· Two-day
camp by VIVO Healthcare aimed at training tourist guides and adventure sport
providers in medical emergency response
· The first
of its kind programme organized by the Indian
Association of Professional Rafting Outfitters
Rishikesh, March 28, 2013: For the adventure sport providers of Rishikesh, it was an
important lesson in emergency preparedness and on how to save lives and
injuries when confronted by accidents and medical situations on outdoor sports.
An
initiative of the Indian Association of
Professional Rafting Outfitters (IAPRO), a two-day camp on Advanced First
Aid training was held at Rishikesh, a hub for adventure and mountain sports
like rafting , hiking, trekking, among others.
The
programme brought together the people who form the backbone of Rishikesh’s
tourist industry – guides, staff members and owners of tourist services and
package providers.
Conducted by
VIVO Healthcare, a leading name in the field of emergency services, the
programme highlighted the importance of first aid response in medical emergency
situations like rafting or trekking accidents, altitude sickness and other
dangers associated with adventure sports.
“This is a
first of its kind programme for our tour guides and members, but henceforth we
plan to conduct such training sessions more regularly. Our sessions focused on
rafting, trekking, camping and mountaineering,” said Ms Kiran Bhatt Todaria,
President of the Indian Association
of Professional Rafting Outfitters (IAPRO).
"As a
country India stands for safe adventure tourism. It is very important to have
adventure guides and specialists trained in handling medical emergencies. Such
training programmes will go a long way in creating a safer and sustainable adventure
experience within India," said Mr.
Ajeet Bajaj, an adventurer and explorer, who is the first Indian to have
completed the Polar Trilogy by skiing to the North Pole, to the South Pole and
across Greenland. Mr. Bajaj is the Managing Director of Snow Leopard Adventures.
Located on the
foothills of the Himalayas, Rishikesh is a popular spot for adventure sports,
and a lot of hiking and backpacking enthusiasts from India as well as abroad visit
the hub. Recently, bungee jumping has also been introduced in
Rishikesh.
“It is very
important to have people who are trained in handling medical emergencies in
adventure sport hubs like Rishikesh. Such a programme will not only create a
team of first responders but will also give them confidence to deal with medical
emergencies in remote locations,” said Mr.
Vikas Tripathi, AVP, VIVO Healthcare.
VIVO, the
Emergency Medical Services organization, has also released an Emergency
Response Handbook that lists the immediate do’s and don’ts for a wide
range of emergency cases like choking, accidents, seizures, cardiac arrest,
brain stroke, fainting among others. The company that also provides first
responder trainings in corporate houses and institutions has also popularized
the concept of a first aid kit as a prime necessity in all institutions and
household.
